Morocco and Portugal faced off in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It was scoreless until Youssef En-Nesyri scored on a beautiful header in 42'. This was Morocco's first ever knockout stage goal. Cristiano Ronaldo would enter the game in the second half. The second half was even more of a defensive battle by both teams. Portugal was able to get a few shots on net including one in extra time by Cristiano Ronaldo but nothing went through. Walid Cheddira got a red card in extra time. Morocco held on to win 1-0.

On the other hand, for England and France, it's the first time the two teams have met in a major tournament elimination game. France got the scoring going in the first half when Aurélien Tchouaméni scored from outside the box. England would score the equalizer in the second half when Bukayo Saka drew a foul and Harry Kane scored on a PK. Olivier Giroud would score the go-ahead goal in 78'. Harry Kane had another chance at a PK goal but he sailed it over the net. France would hold on for a 2-1 win over England.

Cristiano Ronaldo Quit World Cup 2022
One day after departing the field in tears in Qatar, Cristiano Ronaldo says his dream of winning the World Cup for Portugal has "ended"

In his first public comments since Portugal was eliminated by upstart Morocco in the quarterfinals, the 37-year-old international superstar admitted in a social-media post-Sunday that it's "time to take stock" of his career after 19 years with the national team.

"To win a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career," Ronaldo wrote on Instagram." I fought for it. I fought a lot for that dream. In the five times I was present in World Cups throughout 16 years, always next to great players and supported by millions of Portuguese, I gave it my all.

Ronaldo scored only one goal in Portugal's five matches in the tournament, on a penalty kick in the group-stage opener against Ghana. He came off the bench in two knockout-round games after being removed from the starting lineup by manager Fernando Santos.

Ronaldo became the first player to score in five World Cups, but he might not get another chance in North America in 2026, when he will be 41. "There's no point in reacting rashly," Ronaldo wrote. "I just want everybody to know that a lot has been said, a lot has been written, a lot has been speculated about, but my dedication to Portugal has never wavered for an instant."

France Aims to Defending Champion
So in the end the France vs. England World Cup quarter-final did not come down to the putative Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé tearing Kyle Walker and the England defence to shreds, or the Manchester City full-back stopping a player who had been the tournament's best to date. Instead the spotlight shone once more on a player whose role for France has been ever-changing.

Interesting thing is, France manager Didier Deschamps has admitted that he felt his side were 'lucky' in their World Cup quarter-final victory over England.

Goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud sealed the victory for the reigning holders, in a match where there was little to separate the two teams. England though were perhaps the better team on the day, having double the amount of chances as France while also having more possession.
