NBA 2K26's core gameplay remains focused on a realistic basketball simulation experience, enhanced with a series of technological innovations that enhance both control and strategy.

New Dynamic Motion Engine

ProPLAY leverages AI learning technology to power the all-new motion engine in NBA 2K26, making all on-court action even more realistic. It adapts and adjusts the precise mid-flight positioning of players' legs and feet to their dynamic poses, ensuring realistic shooting and cutting movements. The new motion engine represents the biggest change to player movement since NBA 2K21, delivering a fresh and authentic feel.

Enhanced Shot Rhythm

The enhanced shot rhythm in NBA 2K26 gives players complete control over every aspect of their shooting. Players who utilize the rhythm shot mechanic will experience more responsive jump shots that resemble realistic shooting motions. With these improvements to rhythm shooting, NBA 2K26 offers a more skill-based environment that blends realism with competition for a more rewarding experience.

Just like in modern NBA games, big men will use new signature shots, including a drop step and an over-and-under move package. Players can also mix and match layup styles from their favorite players around the league to create their own custom layup packages. To emphasize control-based, skill-based gameplay at higher difficulties, the green or shot feedback will be universal, and shot timing will be permanently enabled.

Offense

Calling and setting pick-and-rolls is key to breaking down defenses. You can designate a specific player to set a pick-and-roll (press L1/LB once) or have the nearest player automatically set the pick-and-roll (hold L1/LB), using the analog stick to control direction and follow-up moves (such as a pop-out or roll-down).

Additional actions have been added, including a quick shot (hold L2 when catching the ball) and a waist pass (double-click O/B). In the paint, big men will use new signature shots, including a drop step and an up-and-down step package.

Players can also mix and match layup styles from their favorite players around the league to create their own custom layup packages. To emphasize control-based gameplay at higher difficulties, green or shot feedback will be universal, and shot timing will be permanently enabled.

Defense

Defensive improvements include new body type upgrades, redesigned interior defense, and a new rebounding feedback mechanic. System-driven technology powered by ProPLAY generates more reliable inter-player collisions than previous motion-capture animations. This, coupled with new dynamic actions, brings a fresh experience to the action scenes for dribblers and point guards. Meanwhile, the interior defense system has been redesigned, making it easier for defenders to make contact with players mid-air.
