MLB The Show 23 is about to welcome Negro League legends.
This time, Sony has teamed up with NLBM President Bob Kendrick and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to bring Negro League stars to MLB The Show. Previously, new features in this game have been announced. On March 28, MLB The Show 23 will be released on this day.
In MLB The Show 23, there will be a new game mode called "Storylines." In this game mode, there will be eight greatest Negro League players, they are Buck O'Neil, Hank Thompson, Hilton Smith, Jackie Robinson, John Donaldson, Martín Dihigo, Rube Foster and Satchel Paige.
Via email, Sony product development communications and brand strategist Ramone Russell tells you, "Negro League is a very important part of the history of the United States and of baseball. However, in that era, other baseball players were known to many, except for the iconic characters of Negro League. So, we have been planning to introduce Negro League for MLB The Show for many years. However, we need to know what is the right way to do this for an interactive media."
In the "Storylines" mode of MLB The Show 23, it contains short videos about the players, narrative experiences of each Negro League legend and gameplay centered on the important moments of their careers.
These eight Negro League stars are available both in MLB The Show 23's exhibition mode, as well as in other areas of the game.
If you want to get an early look at the storyline, you can catch up on Sony's San Diego Studio YouTube channel as well as Twitch.
"What's the best way to interpret this new game mode? It's a great combination of well-planned gameplay moments and a short documentary series," Russell said. "In this game, these eight players have their own storylines. Among them, I think the coolest part is that after getting to know them, I can immediately play their roles in the game and feel their roles. Being able to turn images and video into a live gaming experience is very powerful and gives a feeling of being there. From outfits of players to the crowd and everything in between, there's that atmosphere."
The eight Negro League players Buck O'Neil, Hank Thompson, Hilton Smith, Jackie Robinson, John Donaldson, Martín Dihigo, Rube Foster and Satchel Paige are just the first wave. Season 1 of Storylines is MLB The Show 23. In subsequent new games, new Negro League players will be introduced. Season 2 will start next year.
About a year and a half ago, Sony approached MLB Players Association and MLB about including Negro League on MLB The Show. And MLB got them connected with the NLBM.
Russell said, "We should take this matter seriously. If we only add Negro League legends to the game, it is not enough. We should do it in the right way."
For every MLB The Show 23 Collector's Edition sold in the United States from now to the end of 2023, San Diego Studio will recognize its partnership with NLBM by donating $1 to Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
