Deconstructing NBA Live Mobile: Why EA can't replicate Madden Mobile's successMay 13, 2021
If you love the game of basketball, now is a very exciting time to be an NBA fan.
The game has changed considerably over the past few years; ask fans and retired players, and they will tell you that the pace is faster, players are more evenly sized and interchangeable among positions, which leads to more ball movement and strategic gameplay.
The aggressive use of the 3-point shot has introduced a new dynamic where a 20-point lead can easily dissolve with a couple of strikes beyond the arc. No team embodies this fresh style of basketball more vividly than the Golden State Warriors, a team that the NBA is all too happy to promote in marketing its brand.
At the time of this writing, EA's NBA Live Mobile is closing on its one-year anniversary and is a top 100 grossing app, but it isn't a consistent top 20 title.
We are in the heat of the NBA playoffs, prime time for the NBA to showcase its best talent, and this weekend NBA Live Mobile only manages to reach #39 on the iPhone top grossing charts (by comparison, EA's Madden Mobile topped at #2 during the NFL playoffs).
This is surely below the sight lines of EA's expectations; it spends years developing titles, iterating and polishing to groom its next billion dollar franchise.
To compare console offerings - NBA 2K17 has sold 3.6 million copies while Madden NFL has sold four million copies (US sales figures from vgchartz.com, PS4 and XBox One).
When the NBA product is so strong, and the brand has its best marketing with the playoffs in full swing, NBA Live Mobile isn't making the strides it should be - but why?
In my analysis, I will deconstruct Past, Present, and Future of NBA Live Mobile in an attempt to explain the decisions made in creating this product and where I believe it needs to go in the future in order to win.
The past: The EA Sports Mobile Playbook: Why EA wanted to re-use its winning playbook from Madden Mobile, and the five pillars of that playbook
The present: Where NBA Live is Falling Short: A case study of NBA Live Mobile using two other titles (Madden Mobile and NBA 2K17) to understand where NBA Live Mobile is falling short and not winning
The future: Paving the Road Ahead for NBA Live Mobile: Understanding mobile as a medium for games and sports, and a proposal for an NBA gaming product
NBA Live Mobile's Pot of Gold update is out nowMay 13, 2021
NBA Live Mobile has unleashed its latest update and it includes some shiny new cards for you to earn. As speculated, the theme that was teased last week ties into St. Patrick's Day.
However, it also relates to the Boston Celtics. It's called "Pot of Gold", and it allows you to add some powerful cards to your lineup.
For a limited time, there are some new packs that you can crack open. These are called Lucky Shot Bundles.
As you might expect, if you get lucky, you can grab some terrific cards. Some of the best cards in the packs are current and past Celtics players.
You can earn Kemba Walker and Jayson Tatum of the current Celtics roster. Each of these has a 99 overall rating, so they could be unstoppable additions to your lineup.
You can even grab Boston players of yesteryear such as Danny Ainge. Oh, wait, there's more than just Celtic cards.
Players like Jason Kidd and Morris Peterson will be there for the taking as well. Each of these is a 99-rated card.
Among other legends, you'll be able to earn players like Kevin McHale and John Stockton. Both players boast a 98 overall.
Stockton alone is worth it as he was probably one of the most balanced players in NBA history. He could shoot, pass, play defence, and handle the ball beautifully.
Want these rewards? All you have to do is play in some special events and earn Shamrocks. You will then have the ability to use these items on rewards.
Now go out there and get buckets. The luck of the Irish is on your side, after all.
NBA Live Mobile is available on Google Play and the App Store for free.
NBA Live Mobile adds three new players to its Trending packsMay 13, 2021
NBA Live Mobile just added some fresh new cards to its Trending card set and each player is very balanced and could be a great addition to your lineup. All three are essentially big men, but they all hardly have weaknesses in their games.
For starters, how about the 2019 NBA MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo? His card flies in as a 102 overall, and with all of the skills that he posses, this is a dangerous card.
Many have argued that he could be the best player in the entire NBA along with LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard. At only 25-years old, he is a four-time All-Star to go along with his MVP, and last season, he led the Milwaukee Bucks to the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to the eventual NBA champion Toronto Raptors.
Next up on the list is probably one of the greatest dunking big men ever in Blake Griffin. He swings in at a 100 overall with his card, and if you know Griffin, you can expect him to take it to the rack with authority.
After coming out of Oklahoma as the top draft pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Griffin has put together a steady career that is borderline Hall of Fame-ish. Starting out as an elite dunker, he captured the 2011 Slam Dunk Contest further growing his stardom.
Since his younger years, he has been selected six times as an All-Star and the All-NBA Second Team three times. And over the years, he has developed as one of the best passing power forwards in the NBA, making him a threat in more areas than one.
And finally, we come to Karl-Anthony Towns, one of the best three-point shooting centres in the league. His card is a 99 overall, and when you think of versatile big men, you always think of Towns.
A two-time All-Star, Towns has made a name for himself as one of the game's best centres overall. Not only is he a great shooter at 7'0", but he can score on the inside too. To add on to that, he's a very good rebounder making him a skilled player on both sides of the court.
